beside's richard's tectonic plates (such a brilliant, banger of a metaphor!), i delighted in this line: "When he is the one who is worse, there is always the up side it isn’t me." i'm packing for NY and can't wait to see you both soon!

These were two enjoyable tales. Great visuals that dragged me into the story quickly and easily, especially #1 the car ride. Thanks for writing these, I just subscribed.

I love that one! We are all the last of our kind.

Is it better to be alone with our mistakes? Do we have a choice? :-)

Love this Laurie -"they can be dressed in silk and they will throw back their heads and lick their lips for crumbs and grease."...for all the same reasons I adore Virginia Wolf. An epic line to be proud of, to hang on the fridge. Hee hee

I live a few miles off the Taconic, and I know those stone walls. I always slow down to a crawl and annoy the other drivers, but that feeling of being squeezed in the worst. If I'm a passenger, I assume the crash position as we approach. Road fights - we've had our share. Thanks for a great post!

I love the piece about Richard. Yes, relationships are like that. And it surprises us to see all the tectonic plates crashing together!

That would be wonderful . . . don't forget you can jump in and then jump out . . . I always thanks people for whatever they can afford to chip in. I like the idea of small contributions that don't create too great a demand. We are all competing for the available generosity of readers who understand the subscription model. It's a strange new form of compensation for writers like me, and very welcome and exciting.

Absolutely, I also enabled the paid feature on Conversations with Critters. I’ve always dreamed of being a writer, but followed a career path in animal care. Now I’m older and focused more on writing. I really appreciate reading your work which is such fine literary quality. I also appreciate your financial advice on Substack. I can do that for you, no worries.

I think you might find some ideas for approaching your stack at the Zoom conversations. They are really pointed and concrete.

Very relatable husband story. Debating whether or not to share with mine :), also the one who all my friends love even more than they love me…

Beautiful essays ... both. Read them waiting to board a flight to New Mexico. It felt like it was meant to be.
