Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the two Jewish guys who wrote "Jailhouse Rock" for Elvis Presley, snuck this line into the song: "The whole rhythm section was a purple gang." They knew what they were talking about.

What a gorgeous piece of writing. “Narratively right” is my new favorite definition of synchronicity.

I like the “narratively right” idea too, thanks for writing about it. It’s good to be reminded that Roth, whatever his personal flaws may have been, is worth reading because he was a good writer.

Also: you’ve also reminded me that I need to look in on Sebald. I haven’t read him yet.

I loved reading this piece. The words transcribed into a movie in my head. It was as though it was interactive and I could experience the sights sounds, tastes, scents and feelings, It is a really beautiful piece of writing. Thank you.

your writing is compelling. I actually with the forward was thinking you were going to include some recipes. Most recently I read a murder mystery involving cooking and recipes before I embarked on my present "Denial of Death" a much more sober and solemn work. Can't decide which I prefer.

well DAMN, this entire piece is just fantastic—like the best of your writing, it makes me feel all the strangeness and kismet of life, its randomness and unexpected connections ("narratively right"!). the paragraph about your father is so sumptuous. i love this sentence: "You may be alone, but who cares, what does it matter, if you pick the right strangers?” you're right about babel's nose (bob hope also had it), and i laughed with glee imagining your father's face as mushrooms! i know i've read and loved the catering sequence before, but the context here (of threads) is different, i think, and works brilliantly. this whole post, man—TOTAL BANGER. brava. i really don't know how you do it, but i'm so happy somehow you do. xx

You admirably fulfill my first editor's dictum: "Take the reader where you've been."

Then there are phrases like, "The need to narratize." And, "Pick the right strangers."

This post made me want to confirm that I was a paid subscriber. I wasn't. Having trouble, though, due to my password manager, aka pain in the a. Can you help?

Oy, another writer who doesn't know the difference between afternoon tea and high tea. The dainty meal is AFTERNOON tea. High tea is a version of supper in north England. Your book editor should have caught that. Diana Rosen, author, Taking Time for Tea
