Love what you said about Kamala Harris. My sisters don't like her voice. I didn't used to, but now I'm happy to hear it. I would so prefer to hear her say whatever than to hear Trump say anything.

A friend of mine does a Kamala impression (professionally, as a comedian) that has made her voice and all her little mannerisms sound so joyful to me. I'm always excited to see my friend's latest Kamala video, and now I perk up when I hear the real Kamala actually speaking. My friend is named Alison Reese, btw, and you should check out her work.

Yay! Kamala! Yay, Laurie!

I get so excited every time I have the privilege to learn from your wisdom through something as mundane as my inbox. Shouldn’t these lofty, scathing, fiery, lovely musings be cast in gold and serve as a shining oracle that others thirst and climb toward on the highest mountaintop?! Simply … thank you 😌

Dear Mary-Jo, I have no wisdom! But I'm glad I make you happy. xxL

"She is waiting for her mother to die in order to come out from under the piano where she lives." What a great description of one of life's barriers – the always waiting for something.

“You don’t need to make a list. Women have been listening to things you think are wrong with them for 10,000 years or so. We're all topped up. You can just love Kamala for what she is and help her win.” ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

"I’m not the same person since Kamala’s face rose up in the sky." Neither am I. Is that a metonymy for hope?

Oh and I love the photo of Richard with his umbrella.

Yes, I think it’s hope and someone I want to fight for.

Laurie, I've been reading you very happily since you started this venture. Just sticking my head out from under my own piano to say this piece has so many brilliant parts, and Ben Whishaw's backside is only one of them. Thanks for making the day brighter.

Thanks, love. You just made my day brighter. Can you picture me stopping the action just on the ass shot to take a pic of the screen with my phone?

Yes I can!

I absolutely love that you didn't take a screenshot and instead took a shot of your screen.

"We sat in the shade on a bench and talked like friends because we were strangers without disappointments in each other. As she talked about her life, a layer of aloneness lifted off us..."

That's gorgeous prose. Insightful.

As to Richard's collapse.....I advise always carry something salty wherever you trod ...this is a quick fix as I learned long ago.....and a touch of classic coke with the salty thing.....olives are nice.

Love you writing.....it's like good talk.... jean

This piece really gets to the heart of my own "stay or go" feelings about this election. In 2020, watching the HBO adaptation of The Plot Against America, I was team Leave. Biden won. We did not leave. Back then, we had a toddler, and toddlers don't really have a lot of strings attached. I figured we'd go to my partner's Canadian cousins, or maybe go sleep on Ranbir's couch in Athens until we found EFL jobs and an apartment. Now it's 2024, the prognosis for a Trump win is much worse, and we have a 6 year old who has friends and does Karate and needs to learn to read. We're just settling into the home we practically just bought. But I'm still team Leave. The logistics are impossible, though. And now, Kamala. I keep telling myself that if these small shifting winds are enough to keep me here, I can't want to leave all that much.

Kamala will win. If that happens and we go, it will be for months rather than years. I really think we can do this and keep the amount of kindness and caring people feel in the dominant position.

I really think we can do this. I really think Kamala will win.

I love this piece for so many reasons. I hardly have time to read anything for pleasure and yet I’ve reread this a couple times already. (Also, weird that the picture in my post today is also an ammonite.)

Please never speak of Ralph Bellamy as Doc Saperstein ! He’s always FDR and in life as well as his spirit a second father to me … I was honored to be one of his eulogists. Perhaps a story soon ? Oh. Kamala ? Breathing life into our bodies and beleaguered minds. GOTV 🎈👍👍

I responded with humour. But Ralph and his wife Alice were my special duo. Have you seen Kamala’s new Freedom ad. ? Wow. To the heights we rise
