As always, so many deep and sharp sentences. But, oh, this one: “When she looks back on her life, she wants the memory to go through her like an ax.” That sentence is worth the price of a year’s subscription. Thank you.
A delightful post. I often identify with Richard, then you, then the relationship, then the whole shebang. I suspect many feel the same way. Uncanny how you maneuver universally, covering so many bases. Exciting to read such confidence. Rock on! 💋
oh how i cackled at the pet lamb chop and delighted at this line: "one of those women who looks like a girl until you notice a layer of life has settled on her." also jane's answer and richard's "why" about rushing heartbreak and michelle obama killing it and you doing the same, week after week, here. another banger of a post, laurie. xx
Another good shlook of Laurie S. You really get yourself all over that page. Nutrition value and it always goes down easy. And yeah, desire fulfilled is a drag. We need that "divine dissatisfaction" as Martha Graham put it.
Will you? You will. You have the magic of connecting your mind with the minds of others, it's not a set thing, it's an aura of communication that keeps me reading line after line, thinking, I know that person, no, I don't, I just want to.
The zoom meeting was lovely. A conversation among writers. You are eloquent on those very things we, as writers, need to bring into the forefront of our minds. Sorry I had to duck out early.
I don’t always read your newsletter, but I never regret it when I do. “She was tall and slim, one of those women who looks like a girl until you notice a layer of life has settled on her.”
Laurie, I enjoyed "Arizona Ten Years Ago." Your writing is very smooth and draws the reader in. I enjoyed your references to "King Lear" and "Jane Eygre." Thank you.
I think when you are referring to a fictional realm, it's the present tense of characters acting . . . the past tense would be for an actual person making an actual choice. Maybe others think of these tense questions differently.
I unexpectedly had to buy a car, my old one was deemed unsafe to drive. I paused my subscription for a few months until I catch up on things! I love your writing.

Thanks so much. I hope today others feel that way! Gotta keep the payers paying. xxL
The wedding planners at Starbucks 10 years ago, omg. They were constant and finally drove me out of there but I never knew anyone else noticed.
Also a lot of pyramid scheme pitch meetings at that time. Who knows, maybe that’s kind of the same thing as the weddings.
OMG, so true!
Saturday morning with Mr Rochester , Lamb Chop, Alain Delon, hard frosting , Richard and you . Start me up !
Let's add Mick Jagger! xxL
Ah you’re a lyric lady too !
I'm so happy to have "found" your substack. I look forward to every sentence. I will follow you anywhere.
Ah, music to my ears! Thanks so much. I'm glad we found each other. xxL

Yup. xxL
I live for your conversations with Richard. I hope to have such interesting, casual conversations

Wonderful comment. You probably know something about the narrator. She is much more inviting than I am. xxL

I will take "no regret" as a compliment!

Should “make Jane’s choice” read “made Jane’s choice”?
What Richard said about what we can steal is thrilling!!
Thank you both very much!🥂🙏🏻💖

Got it! Thank you.

Thanks, love. If you ever want to come to a zoom, including the one today, email me, and I will send you a link: lauriestone@substack.com. xxL
What an enchanting read.
I think things like heartbreak and unrequited love put sprinkle of pepper in an otherwise uninteresting story.
And maybe the anger and frustration that boils over one day can make someone do something brave.
Isn't it the overcoming that makes life more beautiful? The darkness that allows you to truly appreciate the light.
Some love stories are just meant to go rancid. And that's fine.
Just get another bag of nuts. The next one might be the best you ever had!
Thanks for the comment!
